12,000 Police contingent for SAARC security
COLOMBO: SAARC security arrangements will be in effect from today with Police deploying 12,000 personnel in addition to a strong presence of Army, Navy and Air Force personnel. Addressing the media yesterday at the Media Centre for National Security, Senior DIG Nimal Mediwake said all security and traffic arrangements had been made for the 15th SAARC summit in Colombo. There will be alternative routes and shuttle bus services from July 30 to August 4. Commenting on the additional Indian security contingent for Indian Premier Manmohan Singh, DIG Mediwake said a full package of local security will be provided to him and other foreign delegations.

Why the Liberation Tigers are not Liberation Fighters
by Dayan Jayatilleka At its worst, a little learning can indeed be a dangerous thing, but at any time it can be exceedingly annoying. As Marx once expostulated "ignorance never helped anyone yet". In recent days the Sri Lankan press has seen the most careless flinging about of analogies, with the LTTE being written of in the same paragraphs as the IRA, the ANC, Hezbollah, Hamas and Nepal's Maoists. Either the Sri Lankan state or the LTTE is urged to adopt these situations/movements as a model. This is simply ridiculous because one cannot profitably compare apples and oranges, chalk and cheese. The LTTE, while certainly not unique, does not belong to the any of the categories that the earlier mentioned movements or struggles belong to.

President protector of human rights in Lanka - Former British envoy
Former British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka David Gladstone in an interview with the BBC has described President Mahinda Rajapaksa as an avid campaigner for human rights. Referring to the dark days of the 1988-89 period, Gladstone said the current Sri Lankan President was a young Opposition Parliamentarian and a leading human rights campaigner during the Premadasa Government. Gladstone admitted that he and Rajapaksa were very close friends during his time as the British High Commissioner in Colombo.

7 Tamil civilians seek protection with security forces-Mannar
7 Tamil civilians fleeing unprecedented torture and hardships from LTTE in the non-liberated areas have sought protection with security forces yesterday (July 24), at the Navy-Police joint fishing marshalling point in Mannar. The civilians arrived in a locally built boat braving the choppy seas off Mannar, at around 8.30 a.m., security sources said adding that the Navy troops provided shelter and refreshments for the civilians who were extremely exhausted and could merely express them selves after battling their way into the coastal waters off Pesalai. The civilians were later handed over to the Mannar Police and reportedly sent to the Chirakkandi IDP center, the sources added.

Vavunikulam Tank bund falls to Army: 25 LTTE killed, scores injured- Mullaittivu
57 Division troops operating at the combined Mannar - Vavuniya front advanced from its newly established positions at Pandiyankulama and forced further into non-liberated area, 3  km Southeast of Mallavi and have reportedly captured the Vavunikulam Tank bund, in Mullaittivu District today (July 24), at around 10 a.m. According to initial reports received 57 division troops led by Major General Jagath Dias, flanked the western edge of the Vavunikulam tank and also have captured approximately 10 sq.kms of land area during the advances. Citing intercepted LTTE communication military said that, at least 25 terrorists were killed and scores injured in the clashes.

Navy thwarts sea tiger movement: 3 LTTE boats destroyed off Mullaittivu
3 LTTE boats were destroyed, many damaged when the Sri Lanka Naval elite  Fast Attack Craft (FACs) engaged an LTTE boat movement at Chilawattai  in the seas 2Nm South of Mullaittivu, today (July 24) at  around 6.30 p.m. According to the Naval Spokesperson Commander D.K.P Dassanayake, 10 LTTE speedboats were making-way along the Mullaittivu coast and the sea battle erupted when the LTTE boat cluster was detected by the naval FACs on patrol.  Rest of the LTTE boats beached and the terrorists have fled into a jungle patch seeking shelter from the seaborne naval assault, he said.   Source: defence.lk   No damages were caused to the naval craft,  Spokesperson Commander Dassanayake further said.

Air attacks against Tiger targets continue
COLOMBO: Information and Media Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa said there is no truth in allegations that the Government has stopped air raids on Tiger facilities. These raids by the Sri Lanka Air Force are continuing, the Minister told the Cabinet news briefing. Identified Tiger bases are subjected to these attacks, he added. The Air Force has carried out a number of attacks yesterday.

Army captures Vavunikkulam
MULLAITIVU: The Army’s 57 division advancing towards the Mullaitivu District marking another victory captured the Vavunikkulam tank killing at least 25 Tigers and recovering a 120mm gun and two 81mm mortars yesterday morning.

Top female Black Tiger nabbed
A suspected top LTTE female suicide cadre belonging to the Black Tiger Brigade was nabbed by a special police team -- at a garment factory in Horana last afternoon. The 34-year-old woman, who is reportedly from Killinochchi, was arrested following a tip off by a prospective employer who had noticed something suspicious about her.
